Our Adoption Policies
Prior to bringing in your parrot for parrot-adoption,
or parrot-adopting a parrot from Nancy's Parrot Sanctuary, the following
requirements must be met.
Placement
Adoption
Some of our available birdies
Placement
- Perspective person must reside in NJ.
I need to be able to check up on how placed birdies are doing.
- Parrots being placed must have a clean
bill of health from a licensed Veterinarian before placing them at the
Sanctuary.
- Any available paperwork for the bird must
be brought to the Sanctuary before, or at, the delivery of the bird. This
paperwork may include: permit, bill of sale, medical history, what the
bird eats, habits and behaviors, etc. At the very least we must receive
a receipt with date of donation, name address and telephone number of the
former owners, stating that ownership is being transferred to Nancy's Parrot
Sanctuary. It is a state law in NJ that this paperwork be provided.
- Any cages, playards, toys, etc that belonged
to the bird would be much appreciated. This will make the transition less
traumatic for the bird and can be claimed as a tax deduction as well.
- Parrots donated to the Sanctuary may not
have any stipulations attached. Once a bird is placed at the Sanctuary,
the Sanctuary has sole rights to make determinations regarding the birds'
health and best interests.

Adoption
- Person(s) wishing to parrot-adopt must
be educated fully on the care, nutrition, caging, sanitation and health
needs of the parrot. They may already have this knowledge or must be willing
to learn it by Nancy's Parrot Sanctuary.
- Any bird parrot-adopted from Nancy's Parrot Sanctuary
may not be sold, given away or have ownership of the bird transferred.
Any person who becomes unable to care for a bird from the Sanctuary must
transfer ownership of that bird back to the Sanctuary or in special cases,
permission may be given by the Trustees of the Sanctuary for the parrot-adoptive
owner to place the bird in a new home. The parrot-adoption fee will not
be returned.
- A parrot-adoption fee
will be charged based on costs incurred for the Parrot, purchase costs
incurred by the Sanctuary, veterinary bill, etc.
- Any parrot parrot-adopted from Nancy's Parrot
Sanctuary found later to be in deplorable or unacceptable conditions
will be confiscated immediately and returned to the Sanctuary. The parrot-adoption
fee will not be returned. Conditions deemed unaccepable and deplorable
include:
- Inproper caging - cage too small - the bird must
be able to open and exercise its wings comfortably in all directions while
sitting on its perch.
- Filthy living conditions - feces laden, unclean
cages
- Improper diet - The bird's diet must consiste
of a complete food pelleted diet such as Harrisons and table food such
as fruits and veggies every day.
- Fresh clean water must be available at all times.
Water bottles provide a way of insuring unspoiled water.
- Toys must be in the cage (and changed regularly)
to provide the bird with amusement and stimulation.
