All
about topaz
Topaz
occurs in a wide range of colors including red, orange, peach, pink, gold,
yellow, brown and clear and is found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and
Russia. Naturally pale to medium blue topaz is enhanced by irradiation
to produce a more intense blue color.
Red
and pink topaz gems were used in the jewelry of the 18th and 19th Century
Russian Czarinas and is why topaz is sometimes called "Imperial Topaz".
Topaz
should be generally free from inclusions and should be all well cut and
proportioned. Colors should be even and uniform with no banding or zoning.
Light blue colors will be very affordable. Fine Imperial Pink Topaz and
other Imperial Topaz colors can be quite expensive due to their rarity.
Almost 100% of the blue topaz on the market today is heated and irradiated
which produces that pure stable blue color. The colors range from a pale
blue called sky blue to progressive darker shades called baby Swiss blue,
American blue, Swiss blue, and London blue. Other topaz colors such as
yellow and pink can be enhanced through treatment to produce gems that
show a pinkish or reddish tint.
The
pinkish or reddish gems are called the above Imperial topaz; the yellow
are called Precious topaz. Since the crystal habit is orthorhombic, topaz
is usually cut in elongated oval or emerald cut shapes that maximize the
yield from this type of rough.
One
important note about Imperial Topaz. In some Imperial Topaz colors, such
as sherry red, pink, and salmon, it is quite difficult to find matching
stones of any size that perfectly match for color tone and saturation.
