Review of EF Academy in Thornwood, NY – Teachers/Professors

During my son’s time at EF, he encountered really fantastic teachers… and teachers who could definitely improve.

I’ll start off with some names and add to them over the coming weeks:

• Header Master – Vladimir Kuskovski
• Drama Teacher – Giovanni Villari
• International Rep  – Jason Kitschner

One of the things you really have to be up on, however, is mental health resources (especially if your kids are not used to being on their own).

Make no mistake about it – mental health trumps just about any other concern when you send your child away to a boarding school.  And if your child is NVLD, you definitely want to speak to the management there.  NVLD kids tend to say what’s on their mind (aka being totally honest) and teachers need to learn how to understand/accommodate such bright, promising, and at times, extremely frustrating, kids.

Unfortunately, this understanding was not evident in situations that involved him.  🙁  That is one reason why even though he flourished at the school, and was a very powerful force for “good” (his absence has really been felt by the rest of the kids) … he was told he could no longer be an away student (aka he would have to commute the 88 miles each day).  

Of course, that would never happen.

We *were* given the option that my son completes his year via online classes, but that would then make him ineligible to continue studying for the IB.   🙁

Given my son had his heart and soul set on it… learning that was now an impossibility was super painful for him.  It totally disrupted his junior year and we have no idea what will happen next.

However, the future IS always unwritten.. so we’ll see.
