🌠 The Concept of Polarized Marketing? Part 1

Ever wake up one morning… and realize that one way people succeed online is by polarizing marketing?

I’ll probably write more of a tutorial about such a concept but for now…

I’d like to mention one part of my silent marketing investigation.

Due to life doing its usual Character Building, I decided to spend some time yesterday mutely watching how Different Groups of Humanity…

(Hobbies / Academic Industries / Beliefs / etc.)

… spent a rather massive time chatting amongst themselves how they are right and everyone else is wrong.

Worse, they proactively scoured the Internet to discover people who weren’t part of Them…. and organized activities to descend up those who haven’t Seen The Light and *Make* Them Seeeeeeeee…….

…. by any means possible.

’twas rather enlightening to watch.

It reminded me back of a time when I participated in polarizing my audience as well (gosh, what, 12? 14? years ago).

My polarization focused upon (get this) weight loss. I was confident…

(oh *so very* confident in my youth and ignorance)

that I knew the simple solution to weight loss:

Expend more calories than one consumes.

Common sense, you know? Except…..

It tends to ignore things like, oh, gee, I don’t know….

* Genetics

* Ability to actually *move* enough to work off more calories than one can consume

* Time required *to* move/exercise for the above…

and sooo much more.

Now, today, I look back at my time back then…. and OMG am I motified of my arrogance and belief that I knew all the answers.

I proactively took my stance back then that my MY answers were the *right* answers.

I happily posted day after day after day about how my concepts were right… and everyone else was wrong.

To this day, I am ashamed at how casually I dismissed whatever counters were brought to my attention back then. Willing I was to minimize other peoples’ *real life experience* in my attempt to get them to See The Light!

But I digress.

That was then, and here is now.

And 14 years or so afterwards… I see that people are still doing the same.

“Marketing” to polarize the audience… and ensure that both sales *and* “true believers” grow and grow in an effort to silence those who would dare *think* differently.

You see it all over online…

* HIIT verses cardio.

* Attached parenting to free ranging.

* Fandoms vs. Gatekeepers

In other words….

Us vs. Them.

And you know…. it *works*.

People always want to feel part of a group…

… and one of the best ways to feel part of a group is to be amassed into a “Great Unifier” (courtesy of Star Trek Discovery Episode 1), and “attack” those whose beliefs differ.

As a former admin of a Guns Right group years later, I watched it time and time again (not the ‘amass into attacking “No Guns” folk, but just how 100s and 100s of people would join, just to talk about How Right they were. This was back in 2013 when Don Wilson had released his FB Ads thingee, and I was learning the art of FB Group Building).

So why this rather rambling discussion about Polarizing Audiences in your marketing?

Mainly because back then…. I never realized the *harm* such things can cause.

I never *internalized* how many human beans are, at their most basic, “Mob Followers” – ie, get enough folks to feel offended by mere words (not even actions!), and you can train them to *craved* to be pointed in a single direction like a crossbow bolt and, well, released.

ie, descend like a plague of locusts upon whomever [ Fill in the Blank ] feels [ Fill in the Blank ] and destroy.

This technique sure can help one make money, indeed.

But at what cost?

We’ll see how I continue this tomorrow.
