And….. Where was I?
It’s Sunday!
And first it started with: Biking of Justice!
Then the husband and I decided to go to the Englishtown Fleamarket:
Those are Nepenthes – hanging pitcher plants, aka carnivorous plants!
Aren’t they cool?
And the discussions on my FB wall!
Oh my flappin’ earlobes… just…. wow.
To wit
“=-=-= Something even MORE effective than “Let them fight”? =-=-=
Have you ever had your feelings about a particular idea/passion/debate *change* … because of what someone else on the Internet said?
Up until the past few days, I would have said, gnope, no way, impossible, forget it Jack, let it go Joe, set it free Barb, sell it on the Internet if it returns, Beth, etc.etc.etc.
But then, something so incredibly otherworldly happened… something that was more impossible than generic Japanese scientist saying, “Let them fight” after Godzilla decided to square off against 2 gigantic titans (because after all, what’s the worst that could happen, except perhaps the utter devesatation of this planet and several others…..
(perhaps (look to the comments)
But I digress.
And what WAS that something?
It was several PMs from various/sundry folk who said to me, thanks to the *entire* 150+ comment discussion on my wall… I’ve realized that some of my views just were not right (with this new information I gained).
Well! Flap my ears and call me Dumbo, but wow.
Minds actually *were* changed by a Facebook discussion.
The possibility of this happening is slightly rarer than politicians actually telling the truth more than .03812%, mind you.
Still, though…
It happened.
Which brings me to the flea market adventure of today.
See… at around 10:26am, the husband asked me, “Wife, would you like to leave for lunch today at this time?”
I responded, “Why Husband, I’d like to do just that! But it’s only 10:27am (a minute passed, see). Too early for lunch. <insert mini violins here>).” After holding my hand to my face in utter despair (yes! My helpless female role!) I asked, “How can we solve this challenge?” (making sure to peek thru my fingers to see his reaction).
The husband, being *extremely* attuned to me (25+ years of marriage will do that), suggested that hey! We could go to the Englishtown flea market and see if Mountain Tees Tshirt Lady is there!
Knowing that I would NEVER reject a flea market visit (all together: spring loaded knives!), I said that was grand and let’s go.
So… we did!
The visit was a whole heap ‘o fun as well! Skipping merrily down the dust-trodden paths of people 45 years before me (yes, I have memories of my parents waking me up at 4am to visit this flea market, complete with flashlights, because you’ll *never* know what you’ll find) I realized that the last time I blithely skipped merrily any sort of roadway was when I was in the Rutgers Marching band. 2am in the morning it was, skipping merrily down 42nd street with the rest of the band members prior to a Madison Square Garden performance the next day (yes we were all dressed). What a memory that was!
But I digress. Again, it appears.
Anywhos! I started seeing comments flourish anew from a Meme that I had posted … yesterday. Not even 24 hours earlier! And let’s just say that words were had, words were misinterpreted, and words really just totally destroyed the point I honestly WANTED to make.
Not because that point was *wrong*.
Its because the *way* I allowed some escalation to get out of control… it automatically shut down people who might otherwise have been open to my ideas.
So! Secure in my belief that my ideas were right, I quickly dashed off responses and then returned to searching out Magnificent Tshirt Lady.
MTSL was found, teeshirts were purchased (yay!), and I returned home and figured, Jeepers self! This would be a great learning experience for my kids!
So I initiated the conversation with my eldest who makes the word ‘old soul in a young body’ seem insignificant indeed. Okay that was an entire phrase.
Digressed once more!
Suffice it to say, my ideas are quite different from my eldest’s ideas.
But (and here’s the stuff that marketers would pay $9,997 to learn from a coach), my eldest responded basically:
Mom, if you shut down people from listening to you by hurting their feelings, you lose out on the opportunity to show you think your ideas are right.
My response – I do not own anyone else’s reactions except mine. I refuse to give my rather precious mindspace to anyone unworthy and who does NOT deserve it (aka, I don’t let the words of strangers on the Internet to affect me. I choose instead to reframe those strangers and view them as decaying cockroaches. Would I let a cockroach “make” me feel bad about me?
Methinks not).
And my eldest basically responded, And while that is truly fantastic, Mom, and it really is… do you think everyone ELSE on the Internet has that skill?
Full end STOP on my part. Of course not. It took me decades to get to that point.
So my eldest continued – if you know that most of your audience hasn’t mastered what is common knowledge to *you* – why not rephrase it in ways that will *get them* to listen?
Why not… indeed.
* * *
So! After finishing out convo, I posted the following.
“So! After a rather excellent time spent with the husband at the flea market, I had a fantastically insightful chat with my eldest, who brought up some points that had flown by me with the greatest of ease regarding yesterday’s, ahem, character-building adventures online.
And the end result of that discussion?
I regret *upsetting* anyone in the posts I made the other day.
Upsetting people is never my intention; that often stifles the willingness on other parties to actually *listen* and perhaps revisit their beliefs to see takes besides their own.
I encourage anyone who was/is upset to reach out to me so we can have a conversation about it.
I, personally, think that words should *never* have power over people. In my life, I try to be as independent as possible, and to never be swayed by words from others on the internet. That’s how I’ve raised my children as well, but I can understand if others aren’t of the same mind.
In closing:
Your mindspace is *valuable*. Never ever ever EVER give anyone who is unworthy… rent-free space in your mind. They do NOT deserve that honor. *Ever.*

And the Internet being what it is, all agreed with me!
Just funnin’ with you.
So far out of the 2 comments posted – both basically disagreed.
Sigh.
But what’s your takeaway as a marketer?
You might get a dopamine hit when you’re earlobe deep into the debates…
But remember the end goal of your marketing in the first place.
You want to make money.
And yes, polarizing and defining your tribe is definitely hugely wise!
But what my eldest taught me (and what others PMed me as well), that words have power…
Just that power to first *compel* people to be *open* to listening to you.
Because then you have a dialogue opening.
And who knows… what sorts of understandings can emerge from that?
Who… indeed.

… one who truly understands how to thoroughly engage your readers in ways that cause them to invite their friends to partake in your brilliance?
Well, unless you’re aboard the Starship Discovery, chances are you will NOT bump into a non-corporeal being (unless of course, you’re visiting the Prophets from DS9 but even then, chances are pretty remote).
However!
You *can* encounter such a creature embodied via someone who is a master of ….philosophy!
For example:
Reasons why they would be wonderful in helping you gain your readership include:
(1) Philosophers are the experts at reasoning. Just talk to Q.
(2) Philosophers evaluate others’ reasoning. Just ignore what Q says in response… and create content based upon that.
(3) Relatedly, philosophers also dig deep. Actually, that should be ‘regrettably’, because far too often these days… those ‘styling’ themselves as philosophers are camouflaging their agenda.
Several other reasons are showcased as well.
Those who can imbue philosophy with enough human interest to keep readers reading… well, those folks are gold.

Its not opposing views that I objected to – it was the fact the guy was expressing said views in an extremely jerky way.
So, I blocked him.

It’s Friday and things are rather better. I wrote:
“I’ve been thinking about this for some time.
What is *really* involved in the concept of “be happy”?
One thing that I think is truly sad is some folks (which did include me in the past) think that you must abandon people who do not believe what you do .
We’re talking politics, or international situations, or womens/gays/minorities/
And while that sounds oh-so-glorious in a virtuous way…
See, everyone is made up of so much more than their 4,382 different beliefs.
How do you pick and choose what would be a deal-killer for you in friendship/relationships?
You know – life is *short*. It truly is. And choosing to banish prior deeply important relationships because of *some* other beliefs…
Really and truly decide if that act of righteousness will benefit you NOW and in the future…
Or if what you end up losing ends up being far more hurtful than the original equation.
Your takeaway? Realize that your ideas are NOT the be-all and end-all of all that is Good and Right and Justice-League worthy.
And be very careful with who you decide to cut cords.
The long-term effects could be very damaging indeed… and might not be something you consider during the heat of the moment.
