Where was I? Ah yes, Thursday!
My flapping earlobes, what a day. First the latest question
Yesterday I followed up with
“What do you think parents owe their kids?”
1/3 the responses on that… go figure.
Here’s my response:
” Here’s what I as a parent owe my kids.
1.) Love. They never need to wonder, gee, do my folks love me? I’ve already told them that until they find their soulmate, nobody will love them as unquestioningly as their mom and dad. This leads to security. Another thing that adds to that security is:
2.) Belief. They know that I believe in them 140%. No matter what challenges they might go thru, they know their parents *believe* in them. And if they don’t achieve their goals, so long as they can say they did their very best… they’ll never have to wonder if their parents’ faith faltered.
It never does.
Along with the prior two thingees of security, I also ensure all my kids have:
3.) Boundaries. My kids know what lines they can cross, and what they *cannot*. They know I’m not their friend, I’m far superior to that… I’m their *parent*. *Everything* I do in relation to raising them is to ensure they grow up to become the very best person they can be, and if that means they’re going to hate me for forcing boundaries on them… bring it on. I couldn’t care less if they hate me if I feel I’m doing the best for them.
Additionally, I owe my kids a:
4.) Moral compass. It’s up to me to give them the basis of what’s wrong and what’s right. Sure, they can choose to modify that as they grow older, but the foundations – that’s my responsibility. I need to teach them that YES it’s okay for people to be different, YES it’s okay to be gay/straight/bi/whatHaveYou, YES it’s okay to be Muslim/Christian/Jewish/etc. (but Jedi is really the very best thing to be, just sayin’).
Plus, its my responsibility to ensure they:
5.) Refuse to give other people power over them. I’ve tried to raise them to realize its so self-defeating to say, Someone made me feel xyz… because that gives control over them to unworthy peoples. I’m about halfway successful there, btw…. apparently it’s a very difficult thing to internalize. Drives them bonkers when I tell them they own their own reactions no matter what.
That about covers it as a starter. Im sure more ideas will emerge as my kids continue to mature.”

And what happened yesterday?
Well, ankle fell off.
Not really, mind you – it was the weirdest thing. It felt like the left part of my foot was pushing against the right part of my knee.
I know, impossible. 🙁
But the husband and I did have a Burger King date!
See, to me, *that’s* the Internet Lifestyle – you choose to live life as YOU want. In other words, we’re content anywhere so long as we have each other …. the income earned, goes to the kids’ college and retirement.
Oh, and don’t forget the obligatory Feet by the Beach Internet Marketing Lifestyle!

Don’t forget yesterdays:
Where was I? Ah yes, Wednesday!
Yesterday I posted this question.
“What do you think your kids owe you?”
The responses were… interesting.
Here’s my response:
“Here’s what my kids owe me:
1.) Gratitude that I raised them to the best of my ability. Sure other parents might have done things better, I did the best I could. They should be grateful for all I do.
2.) Respect. I do not have to earn their respect, it is due me and my husband. My family is not a democracy, it’s a benevolent dictatorship and I am the benevolent dictator.
3.) Unquestioned obedience. Well, okay, they’re allowed to question it. But in the vast majority of cases, if I say “jump”, the proper response is, “how high?” followed by, “can I come down now?” NOTE – as they become older and can discuss their positions, more often than not I will modify my responses. But when push comes to shove, Mom rules. End of discussion.
4.) I do not love my kids unconditionally. Love goes both ways. If they ever turned amoral, they know NOT to expect me to welcome them back with open arms. They know never to take either me or my husband for granted.
5.) Mansions. Each kid knows that by the time my husband and I are old and grey, they each should provide us with a mansion. That would make 4 mansions. We would then have room for at least a herd of piggyMooses.

Yesterday I had the delightful battle of defeating the dreaded laundry monsters (having 4 kids home at one time will do that!). Each kid had decided to do THEIR laundry while NOT checking if the LAST batch of laundry…
… was dry.
You can imagine the soap operas that resulted from that (including those from The Most Emo One in my family).
Sigh.
